Mr Jones was appointed Chairman of Avanco in July 2014. He is a founding Director or Avanco. In April 2017 he announced his intention to retire in August 2017 and a search for a replacement is ongoing.
Mr Jones is an internationally respected mining veteran and an authority on underground mine development. His career started 45 years ago in the Welsh coal mines, later moving to Rio Tinto where he was General Manager of the South Crofty Mine in Cornwall and Director of Production at the Neves-Corvo Mine in Portugal. Subsequently, Mr Jones has continued to work with Rio Tinto, responsible for underground development of the Fortaleza Nickel Mine in Brazil, Palabora in South Africa, Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia, in addition to working with Resolution in Arizona, Freeport in Indonesia, and latterly in Vale and Yamana Gold in Brazil.
Mr Jones has a BSc in Mining Engineering from the University of Wales, a Diploma in Metalliferous Mining from the University of Wales, and an MBA from the University of Plymouth. Mr Jones is certificated by British Mining Qualifications Board (MQB), a member of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (MIMM), a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and European Engineer (Eur Ing). He is fluent in Portuguese and resident in Brazil.
